Portland Senior’s Eye Exams: With Extra Age Comes Extra Care

Your eyes are not immune to aging. In fact, as you age your eyes become more susceptible to certain conditions and diseases. Regular eye exams give you the opportunity to protect your eyes from potential risks to your sight.

We recommend that individuals over the age of 60 have annual eye exams.

What to Expect from an Exam at McBride Vision Clinic

You’re part of the McBride Vision family and we’ll treat you like family from your first steps through our door. We take the time to answer any questions you have about our tests, your eyes, or our dispensary. We want you to have complete confidence in us and an understanding of our patient care before you leave our office. We go that extra mile to ensure you’re completely happy after your appointment.

A great deal of eye diseases are so gradual their effects are not noticed until vision loss is permanent. Early symptoms of glaucoma and macular degeneration are so slight that it’s easy to ignore the signs. Regular eye examinations by an optometrist can save your eyesight with early detection.

At McBride Vision Clinic we test your vision, plus the health of your eyes to ensure there are no early warning signs of age-related eye conditions. We look at your retina including your macula, and optic nerve thoroughly for signs of decline.

Over time, if left untreated, glaucoma may result in the deterioration of your peripheral vision. This is typically the first visible symptom of glaucoma, which is often associated with age. Glaucoma creates permanent vision loss because excess intraocular pressure, or IOP causes damage to the optic nerve. There is no cure, but if detected early, there is a possibility of treatment to delay or prevent any more loss of vision.

Your macula is in the very center of your retina, and allows you to see the finer details in life. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common culprit of vision loss in seniors. It causes the development of small deposits in the macula, called drusen and/or the growth of extra blood vessels in the retina. These new vessels are often more fragile and prone to bleeding, which distorts your vision.

The vision loss associated with AMD can be slowed with proper care and early detection. Your best defense against age-related macular degeneration is regular eye exams, especially after the age of 60.

Your eye is equipped with a natural lens which is made of collagen fibers and proteins. With aging this lens becomes cloudy losing its transparency. Slowly cataracts can hinder your vision, but our optometrists can refer you to an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery to restore your sight. Cataracts are the number one cause of reversible blindness around the world.
