Diabetic Eye Exam

Better Care For Portland’s Patients with Diabetes

Patients with diabetes have different needs, especially when it comes to their eyes. They are at a greater risk for a variety of eye problems like macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and, most importantly, diabetic retinopathy. If you have diabetes it’s imperative you get annual eye exams, and let your doctor know about your condition so they can tailor your examination to you.

A Thorough Eye Exam

A diabetic eye exam is very much like a standard eye exam, with a few more bells and whistles. We test your focusing abilities, range of vision, and acuity, just like a normal exam. The difference is how we examine the health of your eye.

We can detect early signs of age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, both diseases which are more common in patients with diabetes. We use the latest technology such as optical coherence tomography, electroretinography (ERG), and Optos to provide images of your retinas and your optic nerve for the most thorough look at your delicate eye tissues.

Eye Diseases Exclusive to Diabetes

Although diabetic patients are more susceptible to certain eye diseases, there are also some exclusive to those patients. We classify these as diabetic eye diseases. Two of these are diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema.

As your blood sugar level rise, they can cause damage to the blood vessels in your retina. They can close up entirely which prohibits blood from passing through as it should, or they could swell and begin to leak. In some cases, your body attempts to create new blood vessels, but these are fragile or grow on top of the retina.

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious condition that can lead to blindness if not treated.

Abbreviated as DME, diabetic macular edema occurs when fluid leaks under the macula. When the macula is damaged, you have trouble making out fine details and faces. If the macula is damaged you could lose your central vision.

If you have diabetes, annual eye exams are a necessary part of your health plan. Request an appointment at McBride Vision Clinic online.
