Eye Disease Management With Our Portland & Beaverton Optometristeye disease management beaverton and portland

As you get older, your eyes become more susceptible to developing common eye diseases like cataracts or glaucoma. If left undiagnosed and untreated, these diseases can eventually lead to permanent vision loss.

That’s why, at the first sign of vision troubles, you should contact a Portland & Beaverton eye doctor. We will now explain more about common eye diseases, including their symptoms and how these are treated.

What Are the Common Eye Diseases?

The common eye diseases are as follows:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Cataracts

Macular degeneration is a condition in which the macula begins to break down over time. The macula is located in the retina, and allows both the brain and the eye to process vision signals. If the macula is damaged badly enough, permanent vision loss can occur. Macular degeneration has no cure, but it can be managed.

With glaucoma, excess fluid accumulates in the optic nerve. When this happens, the optic nerve often fails, which leads to permanent vision loss. Patients may have closed-angle or open-angle glaucoma. With closed-angle glaucoma, the fluid drains near the iris, while with open-angle glaucoma, the optic nerve is affected instead.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that only affects those with diabetes. With this condition, the retina is targeted. Blood sugar levels skyrocket, which damages blood vessels. These may leak blood. This too can lead to permanent vision loss.

Lastly, there’s cataracts. These tiny clouds form over your eyes. This isn’t an overnight process and tends to occur gradually. If not caught and treated early enough, cataracts can cloud the eye entirely.

What Are the Symptoms of These Eye Diseases?

The symptoms vary depending on which condition you have.

  • Macular degeneration symptoms include vision issues, notably distortion and blurriness. It’s important to note that you may not have any symptoms within the first few years of having this disease.
  • Glaucoma symptoms include blurry vision, too. You may also notice light halos in your vision, nausea and vomiting, headaches, and very sore eyes.
  • Diabetic retinopathy starts off slowly, too, so you may not notice many symptoms at first. As the disease progresses, your eyes will become sore, swollen, and possibly even misshapen.
  • With cataracts, besides cloudiness in your vision, you may also notice light halos, yellowing colors, light sensitivity, double vision, night vision, and blurry vision.

What Treatments Are Offered by a Portland & Beaverton Eye Doctor?

At the first signs of these eye diseases, make sure you see your Portland & Beaverton eye doctor. Some of these diseases, like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, are slower-moving. With regular vision exams, these diseases can be caught early.

Your eye doctor will likely recommend wearing sunglasses, quitting smoking, and exercising and eating nutritiously if you have macular degeneration. These lifestyle changes can potentially prevent full vision loss.

If you have glaucoma, you may need surgery. Glaucoma drainage devices may be installed or you may receive a trabeculectomy, which is another type of drain. Laser surgery may also be effective, as this allows for more natural drainage of fluid. In less severe cases, your eye doctor may prescribe medication.

For diabetic retinopathy, a vitrectomy surgery can prevent blood vessel leakage. Laser surgery can do the same. Medications can control the size of the macula, which may be able to lessen the symptoms associated with this eye disease.

If you have cataracts, surgery is the only treatment. This will reduce the cloudiness from your vision.
