June Is Cataract Awareness Month With our Portland Optometristcataract awareness with our portland optometrist

The month of June has been designated as Cataract Awareness Month to highlight the problem of cataracts and to educate the public on treatment for this common vision problem. Cataracts are the clouding of the lens of the eye that helps to focus light in order to see images clearly. This clouding occurs when proteins that are part of the eye’s normal chemistry begin to clump on the lens. The clumping of these proteins tends to increase as the eye ages, causing distortion in perceived images, blurring, double vision and duller colors. Cataracts can also occur in younger individuals because of exposure to ultraviolet light. Diabetes, smoking and alcohol consumption can increase the risk of developing cataracts.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Having your eyeglass prescription changed can help to reduce vision problems from cataracts. Better lighting can help improve your ability to see at home or at work, or you may want to use a magnifying lens to help to see more clearly. Anti-glare sunglasses can help you see more clearly. When cataracts have reached a point that affects your vision significantly, your  Dr. McBride and staff will discuss the risks and benefits of cataract surgery to improve vision. Surgery is a safe and effective way to improve vision after the development of cataracts. Millions of people undergo cataract surgery each year, allowing them to see more clearly for their everyday activities. Your physician can determine if cataract surgery is right for you.

What You Can Do To Prevent Cataracts

You can take steps to prevent cataracts or manage them if you already have early signs of their development. Eye experts recommend seeing your Portland and Beaverton eye doctor regularly for checkups. You should also ensure that your diet is rich in fruits and vegetables that provide important nutrients for good eye health. If you smoke, start a smoking cessation program or talk to your doctor about medications that can help you stop smoking. Limit your alcohol consumption to one cocktail a day or less. If you have diabetes, make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions for managing the disease and keep your blood sugar within normal range. If you take corticosteroid medications for a health problem, only take them for the shortest amount of time. And finally, always wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun.
